Summer of Love & Haight

A comprehensive exhibition at the San Francisco Public Library

S.O.U.L. was granted the opportunity to sit with Summer of Love and Haight’s curator Sheila Himmel at the Jewett Gallery in San Francisco’s Main Public library, to discuss her inspirations for putting this meaningful exhibit together.

During the summer of 1967, young people from throughout the country flocked to San Francisco for the promise of a cultural, political, and social revolution. The epicenter for this experience was the previously unnoticed, suddenly notorious, Haight Ashbury neighborhood. This exhibit showcases period photographs and films, rock posters, grass roots newspapers and flyers, record albums, and manuscript materials from community groups and City of San Francisco collections, all documenting the upheaval of the Summer of Love of 1967.
